A German Junior Fire Department on the trails of 9/11
Not only firefighters around the world connect today´s date strongly with the year 2001, the airplane attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The terrorist attack of September 11 marks the ninth time today.
Junior Fire Department Hamburg-Stellingen visited Ground Zero
Nine years later is the construction of the memorial and the new World Trade Center in full swing. The Junior Fire Department could convince of these individually at their visit in August. The young talent firefighters from Hamburg made an eleven days long trip to the United States as part of their partnership with the Mineola Junior Fire Department, New York.
On the basis of the good relations of the American partners it was possible for both Junior Fire Departments to visit Ground Zero. Port Authority Policemen did the guided tour through the construction area. The completion of the towers is scheduled for 2013.
The incidence from two different perspectives
With the tour of Ground Zero the Hamburg group were directly related to 9/11. Scott Strauss, a former New Yorker Policeman of the N.Y.P.D. Emergency Service Unit, is today an advisor of the Mineola Junior Fire Dept.. He told the young people of his rescue of Port Authority Police Officer Will Jimeno from the rubble of the WTC on September 11. This rescue was made famous a part of Oliver Stone’s movie “World Trade Center”. Very touching, Scott showed the young people original parts of the WTC glass windows and a cross, which is made by Will Jimeno of the steel girders from the towers as a thank you of his rescue.
At the visit of the FDNY fire station “Ten House”, Engine and Ladder Company 10, reported one of the firefighters from his experiences of 9/11. An eye-witness account you can only imagine what was going on in the minds of the rescuers at that day. Six firefighters of station “Ten House” never went back on the day of
that call.
Even after years is this one day in the city of New York and in the people’s hearts very much present.
